What can you use the app for?

CrowdRise gives charities a helpful resource for fundraising. Users can build a profile for their charity, which takes less than a minute. Next, they can begin their fundraising campaign. This can be done by raising funds for one of a million charities or by joining another member’s project team to boost their fundraising efforts by helping out. The user can then ask for donations using the CrowdRise share button found on the project page. This button allows the user to message people about their fundraising efforts using email, Twitter or Facebook. The site recommends that the user ask for donations from friends at least twice. The site also encourages users to have fun in the process. The site states it wants users to “get slightly addicted to giving.”

What is the history and popularity of the app?

CrowdRise was created to give users a way to help fundraise for a charity they feel passionate about. The site allows users to work independently or join a team. The creators wanted to empower users and design a positive, upbeat environment that would encourage people to give. Today, CrowdRise helps many charities and users be successful in their fundraising efforts.

What are the differences to other apps?

There are many fundraising related applications out there. CrowdRise is another that brings with it a unique personality. The site is a little eccentric at times, but in a fun way. Users are encouraged to be enthusiastic about their fundraising efforts. The site also includes helpful tools that are easy to use, such as the share buttons that allow users to ask for donations via email, Facebook or Twitter.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

The CrowdRise website users a grey and orange color scheme that provides a hint of fun and style. Unique graphics and other design elements help the site present itself in a way that stands out from other fundraising applications. Despite the tremendous amount of personality, the site remains well organized and easy to navigate. It embodies the perfect combination of original character and functional design.

How does the registration process work?

A new user can become a CrowdRise member by clicking on the small orange “Sign Up” link found in the top, right hand corner of the Sign In box. The registration form is relatively short and requires a first and last name, email address, desired CrowdRise URL, date of birth (which can be kept private), password and account type (either personal or charitable organization). A check box at the bottom of the form is automatically selected to sign the user up for the site’s email updates. This must be manually unchecked to opt out. After submitting the information, the user is taken to their CrowdRise profile page and can begin updating it with photos, status entries and other details. Those creating a charity account are contacted by CrowdRise to verify that they are a member of that charity.

What does it cost to use the application?

CrowdRise does not charge individuals for creating an account. Charities are given the option of building a free basic account or signing up for a featured account for around $300 per year. Featured Charities are given more exposure and users who donate to them earn double CrowdRise points for doing so. CrowdRise also deducts about 5% on each donation made through the site with a $1 transaction fee for any donations under $25 and a $2.50 fee for those over $25. These costs are required to keep the site up and running.

Who would you recommend the application to?

CrowdRise is a helpful tool for established charities and individuals who want to assist them. Sig up is free and charities only have to pay if they receive donations (or if they choose to become a featured charity). Individual users can also accomplish more by fundraising for a cause they feel passionate about.

  • Build a charity page with photos and information
  • Maintain an individual user account
  • Use the share button to ask for donations through Facebook, Twitter and email
  • Become a featured charity to encourage even more donations with double points
  • Earn your charity more exposure through an online community
